What research is actually for, and when it is not the priority
Research does a few specific things for a future medical or health professional. It teaches you how knowledge gets made, which changes how you read a study for the rest of your career. It gives you a faculty member who can write about your work in detail instead of about your grade. It gives you something concrete to talk about in an interview. And for MD-PhD programs and research-heavy medical schools, it is close to essential.
Now the honest part. Research is not required for medical school. Plenty of schools admit students with none, and no amount of lab work compensates for a weak GPA or MCAT. If your grades are shaky, or you are working thirty hours a week to cover rent, or you have zero clinical experience, those come first. A student with a 3.7, real clinical hours, and no research is in better shape than a student with a 3.1 and two years in a lab.
Also worth knowing: research does not mean pipetting. Clinical research, public health research, health services research, health policy, medical education, and qualitative interview studies all count as research. If bench work does not interest you, or the labs near you are full, look at the school of public health, the medical school's clinical departments, the nursing school, and the sociology and psychology departments. Chart review and survey work are real research and often more relevant to a career in patient care.
The timeline: first year is not too early
Students who have family in science often start research their first year. Students who do not often wait until junior year, assume they missed the window, and end up with one thin semester of lab experience. Both facts are true at the same time: first year is not too early, and junior year is not too late.
What actually changes with timing is what you can get. In your first year you will mostly be offered assisting work, and you will get it because you are cheap, available, and trainable. By sophomore or junior year you have taken organic chemistry and maybe genetics, so you can be trusted with a protocol, and by senior year you might have your own small project. Starting early is not about being impressive. It is about being in the room long enough for the interesting work to reach you.
A workable rhythm: look for a position in the spring of your first year to start that summer or the following fall, stay two to three years in the same lab, and use one summer for an off-campus program if you can. Depth beats breadth here. A student who spent two and a half years in one lab has a supervisor who can write four paragraphs about them. A student who did three one-semester stints has three people who can confirm they showed up.
- Best times to reach out: late in the fall semester for spring positions, February through April for summer and fall positions. Labs plan their summers early.
- Formal summer program deadlines cluster from December through early February for the following summer. Missing them by two weeks means waiting a year, so put the dates in a calendar in October.
- If you are a transfer student or a junior with no research yet, say so plainly when you reach out. It is a normal situation, not a confession.
Five real ways into a lab
There is no single application portal for undergraduate research. There are five separate paths, they run on different timelines, and you should be working more than one at a time.
- Course-based research, called a CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience). This is a class where the entire class does genuine, unsolved research instead of following a lab manual with a known answer. Nationally established examples include SEA-PHAGES, where students isolate and characterize new bacteriophages, and Tiny Earth, where students screen soil bacteria for antibiotic activity. Some CUREs have produced published papers with dozens of undergraduate authors. Ask your biology, chemistry, and public health departments whether they run one. This is the single lowest-barrier entry point because you enroll like any other class, it fits in your schedule, and nobody has to pick you.
- Work-study research jobs. If your financial aid package includes Federal Work-Study, your wages in an eligible campus job are largely covered by that award rather than by the lab's own money. That makes you dramatically cheaper to hire. Check your award letter, then ask the financial aid office how to find or create a work-study position in a research lab. When you email professors, say you have work-study. It is a genuine advantage and most students never mention it.
- Formal summer research programs. These are structured, paid, usually eight to ten weeks, and often include housing, travel, and professional development. Real examples: NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) sites, which are hosted across the country and searchable through the NSF website; the Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), a fully paid program at a network of research institutions aimed at students preparing for PhD and MD-PhD paths; the NIH Summer Internship Program; Amgen Scholars; and campus-run Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) programs at many universities. Apply broadly. These are competitive, and applying to one is close to applying to none.
- Departmental listings and your undergraduate research office. Most universities have an office of undergraduate research with a database of open positions, plus small internal grants and fellowships that fund students. Departments also post openings on bulletin boards and listservs that nobody outside the department ever reads. Get on those lists. Ask a department administrator, not a professor, who is the least busy person with the most useful information on campus.
- Direct email to individual labs. This is how the majority of undergraduate positions actually get filled, and it is the path students without connections use most. It is covered in detail in the next section.
How to email a professor
Direct outreach feels presumptuous if nobody has told you it is normal. It is completely normal. Professors get these emails constantly and the ones they answer share a few features: short, specific, and clearly not a mass mailing.
The process, before you write anything: go to your school's department pages and read faculty research descriptions. Pick eight to fifteen whose work you can actually explain to a friend. For each one, find one recent paper and read the abstract, and skim the introduction if you can. You are not trying to understand the whole paper. You are trying to be able to name one thing you find interesting.
Then send individual emails. Not one email with fifteen names in the BCC field. Expect most to go unanswered. A response rate of one or two out of ten is normal and does not mean anything about you. Professors are busy, labs are full, funding disappears.

- 2Sentence 1, who you are: 'My name is [name] and I am a first-year [major] student at [school].'
- 3Sentence 2, why them specifically: 'I read your recent paper on [topic] and I was interested in [one specific, honest thing: the method, the question, the population studied]. I am especially drawn to work on [broader area] because [one real sentence about you].'
- 4Sentence 3, what you are asking for: 'I am looking for a position in a lab starting [semester], and I can commit about [8 to 10] hours a week during the term.'
- 5Sentence 4, what you bring: 'I have completed [courses], and I have [any relevant skill: Spanish, Excel, coding, a job where you were responsible for something]. I also have Federal Work-Study, so my wages would be largely covered by my award.' Skip the last part if it does not apply.
- 6Sentence 5, the close: 'Would you have 15 minutes in the next few weeks to talk about whether there is a fit? I have attached my resume and unofficial transcript. Thank you for your time.'
- 7Attach a one-page resume and an unofficial transcript. Sign with your full name, year, major, and phone number.
- 8If you hear nothing after seven to ten days, send one follow-up: 'Hi Professor [Name], following up on my note from last week in case it got buried. I remain very interested in your work on [topic] and am happy to work around your schedule. Thank you.' One follow-up. Then move on.
- Do not write that you are passionate about science and want to help people. Everyone writes that. Write the one specific thing you found interesting.
- Do not claim skills you do not have. If you have never used a pipette, say you are eager to be trained. Everyone in that lab was untrained once.
- Email the graduate students and postdocs too, especially if the professor does not respond. They often supervise undergraduates directly and they answer email faster.
- If you get an interview, ask: who would train me and supervise me day to day? What would I be doing in the first three months? How many hours do you expect? Is the position paid? Have undergraduates here presented at conferences or been on papers?
What a first-year student actually does in a lab
Set your expectations correctly and you will be much happier. In your first few months you will probably wash and autoclave glassware, make buffers and solutions, label and organize tubes, maintain cell cultures or animal colonies, enter data, run literature searches, and repeat one simple protocol many times. In a clinical research group you will abstract data from charts, screen patients for eligibility, enter survey responses, and sit through consent trainings.
This is not hazing and it is not a waste. It is how everyone starts, including the postdoc training you. The people who do it accurately and without complaint get handed more, because the thing a lab needs most from an undergraduate is reliability. Someone who shows up when they said they would and does not fabricate a number they forgot to record is more valuable than someone with better grades who is flaky.
What speeds this up: keep a lab notebook from day one, even for boring tasks. Write down what you did, when, and what went wrong. Ask why you are doing something, once, at a good moment, not during a delicate step. Go to lab meeting even if you understand a quarter of it. After six months you will understand half. Learn the names of everyone in the group and what they work on.
- Complete every required safety, ethics, and human subjects training immediately. In clinical research, CITI training is standard and you cannot touch patient data without it. Doing it fast makes you useful fast.
- If you do not understand an instruction, ask before you do it, not after. Nobody is angry about a question. People are annoyed about a ruined sample plus a week of silence.
- Tell your supervisor when you break something or make a mistake. Immediately. This is the single fastest way to build trust and the single fastest way to destroy it.
- Around the six month mark, ask directly: 'I would like to take on more responsibility. Is there a piece of the project I could own?' Most students never ask, and most supervisors are waiting to be asked.
Hours, and protecting your GPA
A lab will take as many hours as you give it. You have to set the number, because nobody will set it for you.
A reasonable starting commitment during the semester is six to ten hours a week, in blocks of at least three hours. Short one-hour visits are close to useless because setup and cleanup eat the time. Once you are trained and comfortable, ten to fifteen hours is common for a student with a real role. Above that, during a semester with organic chemistry or physics, you are trading GPA for lab hours, and that is a bad trade for a pre-med.
Summers are different. Full-time summer research, forty hours a week for eight to twelve weeks, teaches you more than two semesters of six hours. If you can afford a summer without a higher-paying job, or you can find a paid research position, that is where the real learning happens.
Be direct with your supervisor about your constraints at the start. Something like: 'I want to be useful here and I also have to keep my grades up and work a job on weekends. I can reliably do Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, about eight hours a week. During finals I will need two weeks off.' Said in advance, this is professional. Said after you disappear for three weeks, it is an excuse.
- Do not start in a lab the same semester you first take organic chemistry, unless your total outside obligations are light.
- Put lab hours on your calendar as fixed appointments. Treat them like a class you cannot skip.
- Give notice for exam weeks at least two weeks ahead. Labs plan experiments around who is available.
- If your grades slip, cut lab hours before you cut sleep or study time. A supervisor who is worth working for will understand. One who does not is telling you something useful about them.
Paid, volunteer, or course credit
There are three ways to be in a lab, and if money is tight the difference matters enormously.
Paid means you are on the payroll as an hourly research assistant, funded by the professor's grant, by work-study, by a departmental fund, or by a summer stipend. This is the best outcome for you. It means the lab has made a real commitment, and it means the ten hours a week you spend in the lab are not ten hours you had to give up at a job you needed.
Volunteering means unpaid work. Be honest about what this is: an unpaid internship, and unpaid internships filter out students who cannot afford them. Some of the students you are competing with can volunteer for two years because their families cover their costs. If you cannot, that is not a character flaw and you should not quietly go into debt to keep up. Volunteering can still be the right call for one semester to get a foot in the door, or if the lab genuinely has no money and everything else about it is good. Just decide it on purpose, with a time limit.
Course credit means you enroll in an independent research course, usually one to four credits, and the lab hours count toward your degree. This is genuinely useful if it helps you stay at full-time enrollment for financial aid without paying for an extra class, or if you need the credits to graduate. It is not useful if you are paying tuition per credit for the privilege of working for free. Do the arithmetic on your own school's billing before you sign up.
- 1Check your financial aid award letter for Federal Work-Study. If you have it and are not using it, that is money on the table.
- 2Ask the financial aid office: can my work-study award be used for a position in a research lab, and how do I set that up with a faculty supervisor who has not hired a work-study student before?
- 3Search your undergraduate research office for internal grants and fellowships. Many schools have small semester or summer awards specifically for students doing research, and many go unclaimed because nobody applies.
- 4Apply to at least three to five paid summer programs each cycle. Paid programs like NSF REU sites and the Leadership Alliance SR-EIP include a stipend and often housing and travel, which makes a research summer financially possible rather than a luxury.
- 5Ask the lab directly, in the first conversation, using language like: 'I want to be upfront that I need to earn money during the school year, so a paid position or a work-study arrangement would make it possible for me to commit real hours. Is there any funding on the project, or a departmental fund I could apply to?' This is a normal, professional question. Asking it does not make you look mercenary. It makes you look like an adult with a budget.
- 6If the answer is no funding now, ask: 'Would you be open to moving me to a paid position or nominating me for a summer stipend after I have proven myself for a semester?' Then hold them to it.
Turning lab work into a poster, an abstract, a paper, and a letter
Time in a lab does not automatically become something you can point to. You have to convert it, and the conversion is mostly a matter of asking.
Start with your own campus. Nearly every university runs an undergraduate research symposium or poster day, usually in the spring. The barrier is low, the deadline is months in advance, and putting one together forces you to understand your project. Ask your supervisor in the fall: 'Would it be appropriate for me to present our work at the undergraduate symposium in the spring? I would draft the abstract and the poster and get your feedback.' That sentence has started a lot of careers.
From there, regional and national conferences accept undergraduate abstracts. Specialty societies in your lab's field almost all have annual meetings, and many have travel awards for students. Ask your supervisor which meeting the lab attends and whether there is an undergraduate abstract category. Some conferences also have diversity or first-generation travel funds, which are worth asking about explicitly.
Papers take longer and are less in your control. Authorship generally requires that you made a substantial intellectual contribution to the work, not just labor, and it is normal for an undergraduate to be a middle author on a paper rather than a first author. Middle authorship is a real accomplishment and looks exactly like what it is. If you want a shot at it, stay long enough to own a piece of the work, and say out loud in year two: 'I would like to contribute enough to be an author if the project reaches publication. What would I need to take on for that to be appropriate?'
Then there is the letter of recommendation, which is often the most valuable thing you take out of a lab. A principal investigator who supervised you for two years can write something no professor who graded you in a 300-person lecture ever can.
- 1Ask for the letter at least six to eight weeks before the deadline, more if it is application season. Ask in person if you can, then follow up in writing.
- 2Use language that gives them an exit: 'I am applying to medical school this cycle and I would be grateful for a letter from you. Do you feel you know my work well enough to write me a strong letter?' If they hesitate, thank them and ask someone else. A lukewarm letter hurts more than a missing one.
- 3Send a packet the same day they agree: your resume, unofficial transcript, a draft of your personal statement, the list of schools and deadlines and how the letter gets submitted, and most importantly a one-page bullet list of exactly what you did in the lab, including specific techniques, the project, any presentations, and anything that went wrong that you handled well. Busy people write better letters from good notes.
- 4Find out early whether your school uses a committee letter process, which packages your letters together, because that has its own earlier internal deadline. Your pre-health advisor knows.
- 5Send a thank-you note after they submit, and tell them the outcome when you know it. People who write letters rarely find out what happened, and they genuinely want to.
If you hate it, or the lab is a bad fit
Sometimes the science is fine and you are bored. Sometimes the professor has not spoken to you in four months. Sometimes the graduate student training you is condescending, or the environment is hostile, or you are being asked to work hours you never agreed to for no pay. These are different problems with different answers.
Boredom in the first three months is usually not a reason to leave. Almost everything is tedious before you understand it, and the interesting part comes after you can be trusted with something. Give it a full semester before you judge.
Neglect is a real reason to leave. If nobody is training you, nobody is answering your questions, and you have spent five months doing repetitive work with no path to anything else, you are not getting what you came for. Try once to fix it directly: 'I have been here about five months and I would like to grow into more responsibility. Could we talk about what that would look like?' If nothing changes after that conversation, start looking elsewhere.
Some things are not negotiable. Being pressured to falsify or omit data, being asked to work with hazardous materials without training, harassment, or discrimination are all reasons to leave immediately and to report. Every university has a research integrity office, an ombuds office, and a Title IX office, and you can talk to any of them confidentially before you decide to file anything. You do not owe a lab your silence in exchange for a letter.
When you do leave, leave cleanly. Do not stop showing up. Finish the semester or give two to four weeks of notice, hand off your samples, notes, and data in a state someone else can use, and say goodbye in person or by email.
- Exit language that works: 'I have really appreciated the chance to work here and to learn [specific thing]. I have decided to step back at the end of the semester so I can focus on [coursework, a clinical position, another opportunity]. I want to make sure the handoff is clean, so let me know what you would like documented before I go.' You do not owe anyone a detailed critique.
- Do not burn the bridge even if you want to. Academic fields are small, and the graduate student who annoyed you will be somewhere in your life again.
- Leaving one lab and joining another is completely normal and does not need explaining on an application. Two months in a lab is a footnote. Two years is a story.
- If bench research is not for you, that is information, not failure. Try clinical research, public health, or health services research before you conclude research is not your thing. They feel entirely different from a wet lab.
The main thing standing between most students and a research position is that nobody told them they were allowed to ask. You are allowed. Pick eight professors this month, read one abstract each, send eight short emails, and expect seven of them to go nowhere. The eighth is how this starts for almost everyone, including the people whose careers look effortless from the outside.
