Paid, mentored summer research internships at HMS and its affiliated institutions for Boston and Cambridge students underrepresented in medicine — augmented by seminars, site visits, and career guidance.
Who should apply
An excellent fit for Boston or Cambridge high school juniors and seniors from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine or disadvantaged backgrounds who want a paid laboratory research internship.
Eligibility
- Current high school junior or senior
- At least 16 years old by July 8
- Resides in Boston or Cambridge, MA
- Particularly for students from a racial/ethnic background underrepresented in medicine and/or a disadvantaged background
- GPA of 2.70 or higher
- Completed courses in biology, algebra, and chemistry
- Able to commit to the entire summer program, full time (7 hours per day)
What you get
- Paid summer internship in HMS or HMS-affiliated science laboratories
- Mentorship from science professionals
What the application involves
- Fully completed online application
- A recommendation from a science teacher (submitted via the provided link)
- School transcript from 9th grade onward, sent electronically by a school guidance counselor
Application tips
- Start early so your guidance counselor has time to send the transcript electronically before the deadline.
- Ask your science teacher for the recommendation well in advance and share why the program matters to you.
- Highlight your interest in biomedical science and relevant coursework (biology, algebra, chemistry).
- Double-check the residency (Boston/Cambridge) and age-by-July-8 requirements before applying.
- Confirm all components were received — incomplete applications by the deadline aren't considered.
