Simons Summer Research Program

Stony Brook University

A summer program where academically talented high school students join active science, math, or engineering research teams under faculty mentors and present at a closing poster symposium, receiving a stipend award.

Who should apply

A great fit for academically talented high school juniors (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) who want hands-on, mentored research in science, math, or engineering at a research university.

Eligibility

  • Currently in junior year (11th grade); sophomores and graduating seniors aren't eligible
  • At least 16 by the start of the program
  • U.S. citizens and/or permanent residents
  • Requires a nomination from a high school official (max 2 nominees per school)

What you get

  • Hands-on research (~5.5 weeks, June 29 – August 7, 2026) with a faculty mentor on an active research team
  • Lab techniques and the experience of life at a research university
  • A closing poster symposium where students present and receive a stipend award

What the application involves

  • School nomination by January 30, 2026
  • Application by February 5, 2026
  • Unofficial transcript (PDF)
  • Two teacher recommendation letters (math/science preferred) by February 13, 2026
  • Selection of top three preferred research mentors

Application tips

  • Secure your school nomination early — each school can nominate only two students and the nomination deadline precedes the application deadline.
  • Research faculty mentors in advance so your top-three choices reflect genuine interest.
  • Choose math/science teachers as recommenders.

Good to know

Highly selective (reported acceptance rate under 5%). No tuition/fees, but participants cover transportation/dining (commuters) and/or residential costs if dorming.
